Essaouira, on the Atlantic

A walled port town of whitewashed lanes and blue shutters, where the ocean wind sets a gentler pace.

A street in the medina of Essaouira

Essaouira’s medina, historically known as Mogador, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Morocco’s most charming coastal towns. Galleries, woodwork workshops and fish grills line its streets.

Around two and a half to three hours from Marrakech by road, it can be visited in a long day — but staying a night or two lets you enjoy it at its best.

  • Ramparts & port
